What is Google Picasa?

Picasa is a free photo sharing software that automatically finds images on your personal computer and organizes them into albums.  Picasa helps you find, edit, and share all the pictures on your PC (Google is developing the Mac version for release this year; tools for Mac users ).

  • Find Pictures - Finds pictures, organize them into folders, and upload them in Web Albums.
  • Edit Pictures - Double click on a photo and fix, tune, and add effects to pictures (ie. crop, red-eye reduction).
  • Share Pictures - Upload to web albums, set sharing to public or private view, print, email, and order pictures.

How do I get started with Picasa?

  • Picasa can be downloaded from http://picasa.google.com/
  • Once the program is launched it will import and organize all of your pictures on your computer.
  • After your pictures are imported, you are ready to view, edit, and share them.

What is Flickr?

Flickr is a free online photo-sharing community containing more than 100 million images (Pro license costs $24.95 and comes with privileges).  Users can search images contributed by others as well as upload, edit and share personal images.

  • Upload, edit, organize, and share images from your computer
  • Search Images - find images, subscribe to other users' pages, comment on images contributed by others
  • Contribute Images - title, tag, caption, group and share images

How do I get started with Flickr?

  • Go to www.flickr.com to set up an account.  You will need a yahoo email address and password.  If you don't have one, you will be prompted to create one from the Flickr site
  • Follow the directions on the screen to upload and organize your pictures
  • Take the "Flickr Tour" to discover the site's features 

Unique Features

  • Folksonomy - tagging photos
  • Geotagging - connecting photos to the place they were taken
  • Interestingness - photos that are selected for unique features and qualities
  • The Commons and Creative Commons - location for both historical photos from sources like Library of Congress and personal photos donated by users
  • Flicktion - storyboard for selected photos

How can Picasa and/or Flickr be used by educators and students?
